The decision to enter a foster care home or care facility is often difficult for the older person and the family. Strong emotions such as sadness, anger, guilt, grief, hopelessness and fear are common reactions to the move. The new care setting may signify a loss of familiar surroundings, personal possessions, health privacy, self-esteem and independence. Anger, depression, withdrawal and confusion are normal initial expressions of emotion toward these losses. It takes time for most people to adjust to new surroundings; patience and understanding are needed.
As a family member, you may feel sadness or guilt because you cannot provide the care needed by your relative. You may feel angry because of the “situation” or because you have to make painful decisions that your relative refuses to or can’t make. You may be relieved that you no longer have to worry about your family member’s health and safety. Feelings of loss are common and you may feel deflated and useless. You will need time to develop new routines, activities and a comfortable visiting schedule.
